Spotted on a stroll through Knightsbridge..

Usually the sight of a flash car in London doesn’t cause too much of a stir – the sight and sound of something on four wheels costing the earth and out of the reach of most ordinary mortals is prety much “old hat” these days and doesn’t cause the locals to stop stare and point to the extent that it sometimes used to. Having said that, (as an ardent petrol-head) when I visit I’ll always keep an eye out for what’s on the move in the hope I’ll see someone famous (probably driving a Prius!) or my first Veyron in … Continue reading Spotted on a stroll through Knightsbridge..

Jackie Stewart 43rd scale

I got most of the details added to this Denizen figure over the week-end.  I decided to paint it up to represent Jackie Stewart – so hopefully with the addition of the tartan on the helmet (which I painted on) and perched beside the 1969  Matra (a Quartzo model which I removed the driver from) it goes some way to looking like JYS !  I’m not able to pin it down exactly, but midway through 1969 I believe Jackie moved from th Buco open face to the full face Bell helmet, so this figure represents the attire he would have … Continue reading Jackie Stewart 43rd scale

“Pits and bits”!

I’m continuing to add some more detail to my 1/20 scale Tamiya pit set.  Each time I finish a painting session I use the left-over paint on the palette to apply washes and and glazes – and slowly build up the effects and finishes.   I’ve found this approach works best for me with projects like this.    This kind of painting is a nice break from the more deliberate stuff – less stressful as it kind of “paints itself” over a couple of sessions!  I usually have a number of projects on the go at the same time and “hop” … Continue reading “Pits and bits”!

Is time running out for Bernie?

I finished the detail painting of my 43rd scale figure of “Bernie” (Mr F1). I gave him a couple of coats of protective varnish and perched him atop an F1 timepiece for a miniature photo- shoot!   I’m having some problems at the moment with the macro setting on my Fuji Finepix camera – it comes and goes, as it gets itself confused about what it’s trying to do!  However, today it behaved itself and dealt admirably with the restricted depth of field on all settings!  On the subject of “Bernie’s” tenure at the helm of the F1 empire grinding to … Continue reading Is time running out for Bernie?

Denizen Miniatures – more WIP!

Spent the morning putting some more detail on my latest batch of 43rd scale figures – all Denizen castings. I concentrated on this lot which includes, Gilles Villeneuve, Jackie Stewart, Denny Hulme, “Bernie”, Alain Prost  and a Marlboro “Pit-babe”. I pretty much finished the Bernie figure and over the next 24 hours I’ll make a third pass with appropriate decals, and shading – hopefully I’ll post more progress tomorrow, Cheers, Continue reading Denizen Miniatures – more WIP!

The (un)-usual little suspects!

I’m trying to keep the motivation going on the painting front – it’s difficult at the moment spending any time in the studio with the warm weather we are having.  Rather than spend a beautiful morning indoors, I took some of my reference material (scrap books & cutouts etc) and tidied them into some folders and at the same time, lapped up a beautiful warm southerly breeze on the back deck.   I always think it’s worth being very deliberate about enjoying good weather when it does come.  The winter will be long and cold and sometimes treasured memories of warmer … Continue reading The (un)-usual little suspects!

Tom needs a hole in his head!

I’m painting up these 1/6 scale character heads for a friend of mine.  He has a collection of Action men figures and he’s going to give some of them a bit of individuality by adding these character heads.  The thing is, in order to attach them to the figures they need quite a large hole drilled in the neck and I don’t have exact measurements – so as my late father used to say: “Measure twice – cut once”  – better safe than sorry!  In the meantime, I’ve made a start on the Tom Hanks figure – it needs a … Continue reading Tom needs a hole in his head!

Ironic – or what?

In London last week-end I went to see the latest “Banksy” painted on the side of a house in Camden.  His latest piece references “Tox” (a fellow graffiti artist living in Camden) who was recently convicted in court on a charge of Criminal Damage.  Apparently, graffiti artists’ have a kind of “signature” built into their work and this method of leaving a “calling card” if you will, is referred to as “Tagging”. In court, the judge dismissed Toxs’ claim that he was a street artist and that he could not compare himself to the famous Banksy; “As he did not … Continue reading Ironic – or what?

Lewis and Jenson run a gallery??

Well not really; Getty Images are running an exhibition of photographs taken at the British Grand Prix over the last 60 years and it’s curated by Lewis and Jenson.  It’s a small exhibition of well presented high quality photographs taken at Silverstone and Brands Hatch over the years, and if you’re a Formula One or photographic enthusiast visiting central London, then it’s worth a look.   I was in London last week-end, and after dropping into St. Martins Model Cars, and that great book shop next door “Motor Books” (which are both in Cecil Court just off St Martins Lane) I … Continue reading Lewis and Jenson run a gallery??

Our “Nige” – 1/18 driver figure

Using an original (stripped down) Minichamps 1/18 driver figure I’ve painted this in acrylics and added some MSM decal to create Nigel Mansell in the garbe he would have worn while driving “Red 5” otherwise known as; the Williams FW14b.  I added the comms link and breather tube to the helmet and I finished it with a couple of coats of Klear and I also applied matt varnish on the suit to seal in all the decals – (which were tricky to fit as they are intended for use on a 1/20 scale figure) – so plenty of Mocrosol a … Continue reading Our “Nige” – 1/18 driver figure
