Maserati 4 CLT – second version – Ink on paper

Spent the week-end in bed with a heavy cold – once a cold gets up and running there’s nothing much one can do, except lie down and take the medicine!  Even when I’m losing the will to live I find it really difficult to “Play the patient” – it’s just so boring and a complete waste of time!  Anyway being the bad patient that I am, I’ll always look to keep going (even though I’m lying down) – so I spent a couple of hours with the ink and paper again and I did another view of the Maserati engine- … Continue reading Maserati 4 CLT – second version – Ink on paper

Rossi’s secret weapon!

After breaking his leg in June last year at Mugello, Valentino Rossi surprised everyone with his remarkably quick recovery 40 days later at the German round in the  Sachsenring – so what was the secret behind his amazing recovery!  We all know how fantastically resilient and determined an individual he is – I’m sure his mindset and focus were a key part of the recovery process but I’ve no doubt the medical care (and TLC) he received from the doctors and nurses had a  lot to do with it! My own take on it is merely meant to raise a … Continue reading Rossi’s secret weapon!

Maserati 4 CLT – Ink on paper

It’s ages since I did some “plain old” sketching, so I passed a coupe of hours over the week-end working on this picture of a Maserati 4CLT power-plant using ink on heavy watercolor paper.  I have to say it’s very satisfying to capture the essence of the subject using just line and some cross-hatching.  I was going to introduce some washes for color, but I think I’ll leave the lines and the white of the paper speak for themselves.  The Maserati 4CLT was the car Fangio (then an unknown quantity from Argentina) used in 1949 to burst onto the world … Continue reading Maserati 4 CLT – Ink on paper

Fernando Alonso – more 1/20 driver figures!

I’m still progressing through my stock of GF figures – this time I’m concentrating on Alonso in his Renault colors – I’m doing two versions – one wearing the helmet and the other carrying it and having a drink at the same time!  With the exception of the drink bottle tube, (the fingers on the hand which carries it) and some other bits and pieces the figures are more or less complete.  I spent some time getting the detail on the unworn helmet right (I still have to add comm’s wires, hans straps and visor) but so far it looks … Continue reading Fernando Alonso – more 1/20 driver figures!

Armco paint job – overcooked the weathering!

I think it’s back to the drawing board with this hairspray technique for me – I totally overdid the “scraping back” step and ended up with a very extreme finish and not really the result I was after  – stil it’s not the end of the world though as it’s something I haven’t tried before and well, I’m learning!  As I look at it again it would probably suit an older era Diorama – say the late 60’s although, the armco they used at that time was only two layers high – I’ll have a think about it – maybe … Continue reading Armco paint job – overcooked the weathering!

Armco paintjob….with Hairspray!

I’m trying out this “Hairspray” technique which the armour modellers use to get the faded and chipping paint effect.  I applied some initial ramdom “underneath” colors and then gave it a blast of hairspray followed by another thicker coat of top colors.  The idea being that when water is now applied to the top coat it reacts with the hairspray underneath and by rubbing the top coat with a toothpick it will loosen the top coat and expose the colors underneath – it sounds all too easy, so we shall see !   Pictures below show the first coat with the … Continue reading Armco paintjob….with Hairspray!

Another 1/20 Schumacher driver figure!

Some shots of the final product – once again a GF-models fgure sporting the 2007-ish ferrari garbe – Schuberth helmet, Hans device Puma suit – branding is a mixture of Marlboro and Barcode (which I referred to in an earlier post) – To get the best from the figure I made some additions / amendments in the area of boots, gloves and drink tube / comms wiring in the helmet.  The hinges for the helmet visor are domestic pins and 3d paint was used to represent the small lifting handles in the centre of the tear-offs (which are thin strips … Continue reading Another 1/20 Schumacher driver figure!

Another Gilles Villeneuve helmet!

I’m making a habit of re-doing visors – it’s not that I like doing them but the first one I did for this version of the figure went missing!  This is the ‘GF figure of Gilles again as per his ’82 attire but this time I’ve included the visor for his GPA helmet. – As I didn’t have a decal for the “GPA” lettering at the time of construction, I painted it in, however, since then I bought the Modellers figure which comes with a really good set of decals – including the “GPA” decal for the helmet but there’s … Continue reading Another Gilles Villeneuve helmet!
