Wonderful Motorsport photo’s by Gerald Swan

I was researching the Brabham BT26 as I’m just about to start building a 43rd scale model of one, and I came across the most wonderful collection of photographs by a gentleman by the name of Gerald Swan.  All wonderful images from the Golden era of British motorsport (1969 – 74) – wonderfully archived by event and location – including evocative races like “Race of Champions” and the “Guards Throphy” – all great stuff when it comes to researching any number of cars from that era – many thanks Gerald. As a follow-on to my last post, I thought I … Continue reading Wonderful Motorsport photo’s by Gerald Swan

Brabham BT26 – 1/43rd SMTS metal kit

Another recent acquisition for me is this metal kit from SMTS of one of the nicest cars ever to carry the Brabham name – the BT26 from the golden era of the sixties – (1968/69) driven by “Black- Jack” himself and partnered by Jacky Ickx who drove this to victory in both the Canadian and German GP’s  during the ’69 season and second to Jackie Stewart in the championship.  Like the Revell Ferrari I’m building, this is my first 43rd scale model build in a very long time, however, spurred on by the buzz that I’m getting from the F10 … Continue reading Brabham BT26 – 1/43rd SMTS metal kit

Revell Ferrari F10 – back in the BLACK!!

The second of my two F10’s is going to represent (a very loose interpretation) of a Fiorano test version – once again there is just something I find very mysterious about matt black cars – so I couldn’t resist giving the F10 the  full treatment in BLACK!  With the exception of the wheels, all these test version seem to be entirely black, so to save myself effort and time I decided to leave all the pieces on the sprue for the initial coats – I’ll clean up seam and sink marks later and give them another coating. Coming back to … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 – back in the BLACK!!

Revell Ferrari F10 X 2! – more progress and more work!

The “more progress” I refer to is that, I’ve applied the undercoat/primer, however, on the other hand, the “more work” refers to the fact that I purchased another Revell F10 kit!!!  – I just can’t believe what I did – I’m still in shock – it’s at least 20 years since I built a plastic formula 1 kit and then, in the space of a month, I’ve started two!   Since I started the first one I’ve really been bitten by the bug in more ways than one – I absolutely love the lines of the F10 – (it’s a clear … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 X 2! – more progress and more work!

The Valkyrie stalks his target – Count Von Stauffenberg & Co

I’ve had both of these figures in my stash for a many years now and every so often they pop into view among all the other stuff crying out to be painted!  I had already cleaned them up and undercoated them – so when I spotted them yesterday I decided to strike while the iron was hot and block in the main colors as a start.   Both figures (54mm) were produced many years ago by Valiant Miniatures in the US – more reminicent of the traditional toy “connoisseur” type miniature – a bit short on the surface detail but big … Continue reading The Valkyrie stalks his target – Count Von Stauffenberg & Co

More 28mm Miniature gaming figures

I’m continuing my painting exercises with these little figures (see my last post) and over the weekend I painted this guy on his futuristic motorcycle.  I’ve no idea who manufactures the figure, I have 100’s of these from a mad buying phase from many years ago, and every so often I dip into my primed stock and tune up my painting technique.  As I’ve said before it’s a break from the larger (more serious) figures and it helps sharpen my eye for color/value mixing and it’s also very enjoyable! Wargame 28mm miniature figures – painting tip!

In order to keep my painting process reasonably sharp (mainly color mixing) I keep a supply of primed 28mm wargame figures within reach of my bench.  When I get into a bit of a rut with my painting, these little guys are great for getting myself started again.  I think it’s beacuse they are so small, and in most cases such fun to paint, and as a result, I don’t take them too seriously. Like a lot of creative processes, when we relax that little bit the process flows that bit better.  My favourite analogy is Golf  – sometimes the … Continue reading Wargame 28mm miniature figures – painting tip!

Alain Prost 1/20 miniature driver figure

I’m still popping back to my line-up of miniature driver figures from time to time and yesterday, I spent a while painting the flesh tones on this Alain Prost figure.  It’s based on an old Modellers figure which I have modified slightly (see earlier posts) – I’m reasonably happy with it so far so next time, I’ll paint the stitching and shading on the clothing followed with the helmet and the application of decals etc – more on this one soon. Revell Ferrari F10 – work in progress

Here’s a quick overview of my approach and experiences of the assembly process so far: Engine fully asembled – (very straightforward). Assemble both exhaust stacks but don’t attach them to the engine yet – check later that outlets line up with openings in bodywork. Attach engine and lower part of gearbox to chassis floor  – (also straightforward). Assemble and attach top of airbox/rollover bar to top of body Having assembled both radiator pods and attached them to the body, I think I should have left them off  for painting – but we will see later! I also cut the top … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 – work in progress
